Over the centuries, the body drew more and more power to itself and successfully set itself apart from the archbishop of Cologne. Until Napoleon, the cathedral chapter was a significant power factor, initiated the construction of today's Cologne Cathedral and had appropriated the right to elect the archbishop of Cologne.
