Smith Caring Circle

The Smith Caring Circle (SCC) is a community-driven initiative established in January 2021 to ensure the financial security of Barbara Smith, a pioneering figure in Black feminist thought and activism. SCC functions as a 'People's Pension,' crowdsourcing funds to support her retirement. This unique model transcends traditional patronage, building a vibrant community around Smith's significant contributions to writing, scholarship, and social justice. With over 260 members and exceeding $3,000 in collective contributions, the SCC demonstrates the power of collective action to support vital voices within the community. The SCC’s success highlights the innovative ways individuals are using online platforms to honor and sustain the work of influential figures, creating a powerful model for supporting elder care and artistic legacy. The collective impact extends beyond financial aid, fostering a robust network of individuals engaged with Smith's legacy and fostering meaningful dialogue around Black feminism and social justice.
