Launched in July 2021, this initiative directly addresses a gap in existing Cantonese language resources. Unlike previous dictionaries often shaped by a 'Chinese-centric' perspective, 粵典 prioritizes an 'in Cantonese, explain in Cantonese' (以粵釋粵) methodology. This approach treats Cantonese as a complete language in its own right, promoting its value and fostering its continued use. The project has already garnered significant support, boasting 81 total members, with 30 dedicated paid patrons contributing to its ongoing development. These patrons have enabled the project to generate an estimated $226 in monthly revenue, showcasing the community's commitment to preserving and promoting the Cantonese language. This unique focus distinguishes 粵典 from other linguistic resources, highlighting its dedication to a more holistic and respectful representation of Cantonese.
